Restoring a Historic Landmark: TechRender’s Role in Preserving Madison’s Holy Redeemer Catholic Church
Problem:
A devastating summer thunderstorm caused a fire that severely damaged the historic steeple of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Madison, Wisconsin. The steeple, a prominent feature of the city’s skyline, was structurally compromised and posed a significant safety risk. The church, the oldest Catholic church still in use in Madison, holds historical and cultural significance for the community.
Solution:
TechRender was quickly dispatched to the scene to document the steeple’s architecture and create a digital model. Using drone photogrammetry and a full 3D laser scan, the team captured highly accurate data of the steeple without physically approaching the now dangerous structure. This data was used to develop a detailed 3D model, providing a precise representation of the steeple’s original form and dimensions.
Benefits:
Preservation of Historical Heritage: The digital model serves as a valuable record of the steeple’s original state, ensuring that its unique architectural features can be accurately preserved during the reconstruction process.
Safe and Efficient Reconstruction: The 3D model provides a clear blueprint for architects and engineers, enabling them to plan and execute the rebuilding process with precision and efficiency.
Cost Savings: By having the accurate digital documentation, the client can avoid costly mistakes and delays that may occur during the reconstruction process.
Community Engagement: The model can be used to engage the community and raise awareness about the importance of preserving historical landmarks.
Results:
- TechRender was able to rapidly scan the church, turning the model over to the client in mere days.
- No scaffolding was utilized, allowing for safe data capture of the steeple.
- Steeple has since been removed, clearing way for reconstructed steeple using measurements and documentation provided by TechRender.
